Additive Manufacturing Technician

Job description and what you’ll do: The Applied Research Institute, Inc. (d/b/a IN3) is seeking an Additive Manufacturing (AM) Technician to run the AM Lab in Sterling Heights, MI. The AM Technician would support all aspects of AM activities inside the facility using various advanced manufacturing machines (LPBF, DED, and MELD). These activities include process documentation, set-up print jobs, oversee the print process and quality as the machine(s) operate(s), and propose projects to improve AM processes. You will safely handle the metal before and after the build, this includes sieving, loading, part de-powdering, measuring, and safe storage. Manage the life cycle of the metal material, maintain part traceability, as well as coordinate powder suppliers and powder recycling services. Perform routine maintenance on the machines and troubleshoot manufacturing hardware. You will also be required to work inside the machine shop and operate various types of powered equipment, including overhead cranes and forklifts. You will provide training to new manufacturing staff as the work continues to grow.

As the AM Technician supporting the AM Lab you will work collaboratively with government and industry to support AM operations. Your work will require the ability to work collaboratively across organizations and to assist the development and operation of multiple projects. Your ability to communicate and work with multiple organizations is critical to the success of the AM Lab.  You will have the opportunity to excel while working multiple projects running concurrently in the lab environment with multiple concurrent demands on your time. Your knowledge of various AM processes will be vital in your roll and success of the AM Lab.

    Key Tasks:

    • Work directly from CAD models to produce AM components in a variety of different metals
    • Perform machine setup, post processing, ordering of raw materials and managing new and completed work request
    • Maintain schedules in conjunction with safety and quality in a fast-paced environment
    • Keep a clean, organized, and thoroughly maintained workspace
    • Complete production builds per operating schedule, and support part flow through process as needed to support business goals for quality and on-time delivery metrics
    • Observe, log, and report new and continuing printer and part quality related issues
    • Operate forklifts and remote-controlled cranes to safely move product around the facility
    • Inspect material and make notations of any exceptions and/or damages for all inbound and outbound shipments
    • Monitor and maintain warehouse equipment and machinery

    Required Qualifications to Apply:

    • 2+ years of experience in manufacturing environment, operating, and working with high-tech machinery (CNC machines, additive manufacturing, welding, AM polymer machines, robotic welding, CMM or similar)
    • Experience in one or more of the following 3D modeling software packages: SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Creo
    • Excellent mechanical skills, including the use of both power and hand tools
    • Hands-on experience with precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, height gages, precision scales, etc.)
    • Must have the ability to lift, push, pull, and carry items up to 50 pounds
    • Ability to stand, sit, or be in other physically demanding positions for long periods of time
    • Strong communication skills and ability to read and provide feedback on technical documents
    • Demonstrate ability to work with government, and small businesses to provide technical approaches and assistance to solve technical challenges
    • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • 1+ years working as an AM technician with either LPBF, DED, or MELD machines
    • Experience in a startup or agile development environment
    • AS in Mechanical, Electrical, or Optical Technology, or related field
    • Familiarity working in labs and exposure to lab activities in various technical fields
    • Experience working with Advanced Manufacturing and Reverse Engineering is a plus
    • Knowledge of CNC programming a plus
    • Experience with metal powders is a plus
